Only 28 per cent of managers can easily identify the skills within their organisation, according to a survey of Times top 1000 managers, commissioned by HR and accounting software suppliers Infinium.
The survey suggests that the biggest barrier to knowledge management is that although most managers know who their 'knowledge workers' are, they lack information about their evolving skills and experience.
The second biggest barrier is lack of time - 66 percent of managers say workers are willing to share this knowledge if asked. The third biggest barrier is how skills information is recorded, with a third of organisations still using paper-based methods.
