The UK courts recently witnessed a female employee suing the BBC after she took offence to a male colleague downloading a pornographic screensaver.
Elsewhere, reports have filtered through of staff in major blue-chip companies being found playing computerised gambling games.
Such examples of internet abuse look set to increase if a recent report from the US is anything to go by. A survey of 224 human resources directors in California has found nearly two out of three companies in the US have disciplined staff for internet abuse, and one in three have terminated an employment contract for the same reason.
In a bid to stem this, City-based network service provider and internet access manager Hydra has adopted Websense, a unique set of filtering devices for internet traffic. This includes a monitoring module which observes network-to-internet traffic and logs information based on parameters from management modules.
"Hydra now allows customers to enforce practical and sensible measures towards internet regulation without restricting access to legitimate sites," said Mark O'Hara of Hydra.
