The demand for storage peripherals from corporates is soaring due to a sharp rise in the practice of hotdesking, teleworking and virtual offices.

According to SmartDisk Europe there has been a 16 per cent rise in the number of storage and multimedia devices bought by corporates in the past six months. The digital content specialist found that organisations are increasingly purchasing laptops rather than PCs.

This has led to bulk buying of products including Zip drives and CD-RWs as IT departments try to standardise on equipment used by employees on the road.

The demand from startups in particular would suggest that many companies are developing mobile as well as corporate strategies.

"For some time now there has been talk of the mobile revolution but there has been little evidence to suggest that it's really taking hold," said Grant Morgan, managing director at SmartDisk. "Clearly it's now being taken seriously by corporates who are very sensibly trying to take control of mobile computing from the outset."

"Obviously this trend is great news for us, but it also means that mobile working is becoming a reality rather than being a pie in the sky concept," he added.
