New tests show that Apache's Web server running under Linux on four-way servers can scale to compete in performance with Microsoft's IIS Web server running under Windows 2000.
Long-standing doubts about the ability of Linux to scale on four-way servers should be eased by the findings, published in IT Week's sister publication PC Magazine in the UK this week.
The results show that Apache Web server 1.3.23 and Red Hat Linux 7.3 scale as well as, or better than, Microsoft's IIS 5.0 Web server on Windows 2000. Tests running the WebBench 4.01 benchmark with a mix of CGI requests showed performance nearly doubling for both IIS and Apache when using four processors instead of a single CPU.
Open source software like Apache is likely to be key to Intel's 64bit ambitions until vendors deliver applications in volume, which is unlikely until several months after Microsoft releases Windows.Net Server later this year.
