Samsung kit goes wireless

Samsung Electronics has announced a raft of new mobile products, including Centrino-based laptops, and a workgroup laser printer with built-in wireless LAN (WLAN) capability.

The UK arm of the Korean IT giant has introduced a number of new products aimed at large corporates as well as smaller businesses and consumers.

Two of the new laptop ranges are based on Intel's Centrino technology that is optimised for long battery life and includes integrated 802.11b wireless LAN

"Most vendors have simply stuck Centrino into an existing chassis, but our models are designed from the ground up to make best use of the technology," said Peter Lunn, marketing manager for Samsung's IT product group.

Samsung's Q20 series of Centrino-based ultraportables have a slimline design and feature a three-in-one card slot supporting SD, MMC and Memory Stick Flash storage cards. Prices for the Q20 series start at £1,399.

Models in the thin and light X05 series are also based on Centrino, and boast a Samsung-made 14.1in display that uses 20 percent less power than rivals, according to the firm. Prices for this range start at £999.

Samsung's more conventional P20/P25 series are desktop replacements based on Intel's Mobile Pentium 4-M processor. The corporate models in this range feature built-in WLAN and a fingerprint scanner for biometric security, as standard. The P20/P25 series models cost from £1,299.

Samsung also announced new printers, including its workgroup ML2100 series.

One model, the ML2151W, allows mobile staff to connect to the printer from a wireless laptop. The 20 page per minute ML2151W also has a standard 10/100 Ethernet port, and costs under £500, Samsung said.
