Sun Microsystems has added to its archiving offerings, announcing its first midrange modular library, StorageTek SL3000.

The library, similar to the rest of the StorageTek portfolio, supports open systems and mainframe environments.

Jon Benson, Sun's storage vice president, said in a statement, “Sun’s extensive portfolio of innovative, scalable, open archive solutions change the economic equation for companies that need to manage their IT bottom lines despite exponential data growth and ever-expanding retention periods.”

Also unveiled was fourth generation StorageTek T9840D Tape Drives. The new version can still read and write previous generations of the drive but adds faster data access, said Sun.

The third generation of Sun’s Content Infrastructure System (CIS) is also now available. William Trotman, Sun UK storage product manager, referred to the new edition of CIS as “archive in a box” due to it being the first multi-tiered archive appliance to enter the market

Sun has also taken further steps in its commitment to open source its storage software. Sun StorageTek 5800 System (Honeycomb) has gone open source and soon Storage Archive Manager and the Sun Crypto Key Management System 2.0 will follow, according to the firm.
