Some 90 per cent of websites should be taken off the internet as they could do irreparable damage to a company's branding, an application software provider has claimed.

Atmyside.com, a customer relationship management specialist, rated 1000 company websites, giving all but one tenth of them a score of less than 50 per cent.

Key failings include limited or no customer service facilities, poor design and poor navigation. "Not only is there no point in having a token web presence, it can also do irreparable damage to a company's brand," said Richard Tucker, joint chief executive of atmyside.com.

"You wouldn't dream of publishing a telephone number on a brochure without having the facility to answer enquiries, so why doesn't this sound logic extend to the web?" he asked.

"Although it sounds radical, the safest scenario for most is to pull the site down and start again. And fast, before web-savvy customers start looking elsewhere. That's if they haven't already," he added.
