Seagate unleashes 750GB external hard drive

Hard drive manufacturer Seagate Technology this week introduced what it claims to be the world's first three-quarter terabyte external hard drive, the Seagate 750GB Pushbutton Back-up Hard Drive.

The small desktop device claims to hold all the following example content: 15,000 digital songs, 15,000 digital photos, 50 hours of home videos, 50 computer games, and 25 DVD movies.

This would still leave 300GB of additional space for backup of notebook and desktop computers.

"Our lives are increasingly dependent on digital content, and digital music, photos, movies and documents are the currency of the new millennium," said Jim Druckrey, senior vice president and general manager at Seagate Branded Solutions.

"Seagate is changing the rules and providing new solutions for collecting, storing and protecting the artefacts of our digital age, and doing it in ways that more easily fit our lifestyles."

The Seagate 750GB Pushbutton Back-up Hard Drive includes backup software that protects system and data files.

The unit also includes USB 2.0 and FireWire 1394 connections to provide a range of connectivity choices for people with different computing platforms in approximately a 7in by 7in footprint.

It is the first 3.5in external drive to use Seagate's perpendicular recording technology, and is based on the newly announced Barracuda 7200.10 family with data density of up to 188GB per disc.

The Seagate 750GB Pushbutton Back-up Hard Drive will be available in May and will retail for $559.
