Toshiba
has produced a 2.5in hard disk which it claims can hold 200GB of data.
The drive is based on Toshiba's Perpendicular Magnetic Recording (PMR)
technology and features the world's highest areal density at 178.8 gigabits per
square inch.
Scott Maccabe, general manager at Toshiba's Storage Device Division, said
that the company had listened to mobile PC manufacturers' needs for
high-capacity storage in a small form factor.
"Our technology innovation in PMR has laid the foundation for delivering the
industry's highest capacity and areal density in the standard mobile drive form
factor," he said.
The 200GB dual-platter MK2035GSS is Toshiba's first PMR drive to incorporate
tunnel magneto-resistive recording head technology.
The company said the drive weighs 98 grams and incorporates the Serial ATA II
interface with native command queuing, enabling faster data transfer rates.
Toshiba debuted the technology at
Computex in Taipei
and plans to start mass production in August 2006.
