Vonage
Holdings announced yesterday that it has acquired three "key VoIP" patents
from Digital Packet Licensing.
The three US patents
(4782485/5018136/5444707)
concern the compression of packetised digital signals commonly used in VoIP
technology.
"We are committed to developing, acquiring and protecting the root
technologies that are at the heart of our business," said Michael Tribolet,
president of Vonage America.
He added that Vonage's strategic plan includes "a concerted effort to grow,
create and acquire other significant intellectual property portfolios".
According to Vonage, the acquisition now places it "in control of pending
litigation" against
Sprint
Communications LP and
Verizon
Communications, among others, for alleged infringement of one of these VoIP
patents.
Vonage added that it is presently in cross-licensing negotiations with these
firms concerning the use of the newly acquired intellectual property.
Telecoms companies including
Motorola,
Time
Warner and
Qwest
Communications have already settled with and/or taken a licence from Digital
Packet on these VoIP patents.
As a result of acquiring the VoIP patents, Vonage also assumes ownership and
control over these agreements.
