Sun's JavaOne is the one of the biggest developer conferences in the world, with 15,000 developers gathering to hear the vendor's plans for its popular software.
As well as showcasing the latest Java innovations on the desktop and in mobile devices, Sun watchers will be keen to discover more about the company's plans concerning open source.
Whether Java will take an open source route, and if so which parts and how soon, will be key questions, as well as how Sun is going to help Java backers respond to competition from Microsoft's .Net.
